In this mixed-media work, Joan Barbarà weaves together symbolic elements and abstract forms to create a composition rich in meaning and atmosphere. The lower right corner features a black-and-white chessboard alongside a knight piece — a clear reference to strategy, duality, and the idea of calculated movement. This motif introduces a narrative layer, inviting the viewer to consider the balance between instinct and intellect.
At the center of the composition, a stylized chalice drawn with fluid, undulating lines evokes multiple symbolic interpretations: it may signify celebration, introspection, or even ritual. Its placement and form suggest a spiritual or emotional focal point, around which the rest of the elements seem to orbit.
The background is built through an abstract layering of dark blue, mustard yellow, and creamy white tones, applied with techniques such as airbrushing, tearing, and collage. This textured surface suggests mist, atmosphere, or inner movement — contributing to the dreamlike and expressionist tone of the work.
True to Barbarà’s mature style, the piece employs his characteristic mixed collage technique, blending abstract shapes with figurative and symbolic references. The result is a poetic visual language that navigates between the visible and the intangible, the material and the metaphoric.
