Biography
Joan Barbarà i Gómez (1927–2013) was one of the most highly esteemed etchers on the international scene, renowned as a leading figure in contemporary Spanish printmaking. Born in Barcelona, he began his artistic career in 1944 and held his first solo exhibition in 1957. After studying in Paris, he collaborated with iconic artists such as Matisse, Picasso, and Miró. Barbarà’s work evolved from classical to avant-garde, combining technical mastery with creative innovation. Notable works include La masía, Empúries, and his Ibiza etching series. A member of the Real Academia Catalana de Bellas Artes, his legacy is preserved in collections like the Biblioteca de Cataluña.
